Why Gutters Overflow During Heavy Rain Even When They Look Clean

Debris is only one cause of overflow. Learn how roof valleys, slope, outlets, downspouts, guards and capacity affect water flow.

An open, debris-free gutter can still overflow when water reaches it faster than the system can move that water through the available outlets and downspouts.

Why can a clean gutter overflow?

Possible causes include a low or sagging section, insufficient slope, concentrated roof-valley flow, restricted outlets, blocked downspouts, incompatible guards or inadequate capacity. The location of the overflow is an important clue.

Roof valleys concentrate flow

A broad roof area may direct a large portion of its water toward one short section. Overflow directly below a valley does not automatically mean the full gutter run is undersized.

A low section can hold water
